Healthy Coffee Substitutes

Healthy Coffee Substitutes

Ok, so your probably wondering what else you can slurp on in place of your morning coffee, dandelion has a subtle similarity to coffee, with the added bonus of doubling as a liver tonic! I created a yummy recipe incorporating dandelion tea and raw cocoa in last week’s post – YUMBO!  check it out here.

Chai tea is another soothing and delicious option if your craving a warm creamy beverage. I make mine on frothed up almond milk sprinkled with fresh cinnamon, but if you’re in a hurry or not in the mood for being fancy, you can always just pour the almond or rice milk straight into the infused brew. Rainbow Chai make a delicious organic blend – check it out here (and see below for how it could put you on a plane to India).

Green Goddess Juice

Aside from herbal teas and creamy options such as Chai I like to start my day with a green vegetable juice. View my personal ‘Green Goddess’ blend here. I do this every day first thing and it really will become a healthy  addiction and I promise it won’t turn you green, however make it a daily habit and you really will turn into a healthy-looking goddess. Not only will it alkalise your insides (the best way to slow the ageing process), but it will also replace your craving for coffee by starting your day this way.

Coconut water

Drinking the water from a fresh, young coconut is another way to wean off the bean. It’s naturally sweet but surprisingly low in sugar, and if you scoop out the flesh, you’ll feel totally satisfied thanks to all the good fat that will never go to your hips. If lopping the top off a fresh coconut is not possible, you can grab a bottle of coconut water, just be sure it has no added sugar, and choose brands that come no larger than 250-300mls.

Black & green tea Vs coffee

Like coffee, black and green tea also contains caffeine. However, unlike coffee, they include an amino acid called ‘L-Theanine’ which has a calming effect on the nervous system. I actually administer L Theanine in capsule form in therapeutic doses when treating cases of anxiety and nervous tension. It is because of theanine’s calming effect that we don’t experience the stimulation or shakes that can occur with drinking coffee.

If you haven’t yet put yourself into the draw to win one return ticket to India*, all you need to do is follow these three easy steps:

  1. subscribe to my blog
  2. ‘like’ my facebook page
  3. purchase two packs of delicious Rainbow Chai or Dandelion tea

  1. HI Elissa

water decaffinated coffee is better than regular consumption of caffinated coffee, particularly if you are trying to reduce adrenalin and fatigue. Better still start your day with a green goddess vege juice. see my recipee here
